Sir C. Warren,
The enclosed letter came this morning from the Post Office. You will see that the envelope contains an enclosure that was never intended to be put into it, and it is the first few lines of the letter so enclosed that relate to the Whitechapel murder. As soon as you have done with it, please return it to me, that I may send it back to the Post Office who have only given it up on a warrant from the S.of S.
G. Lushington
15. Oct. 88.
[Here there is a note in the right margin â âPutup CMâ]
There is a Home Office memo slip4 included:
To the REGISTRY HOME OFFICE.

Send Jane Bromleyâs
Letter back to P.O.

Mr Moran. [G. Moran was the Home Office superintendent of registry 1876â98]
What was the
Date of H.O. warrant?
CM

This is followed by a letter5 from Sir Charles Warren dated 17 October 1888:
17.10.88
Confidential,
Mr. Lushington.
I return the letters from Post Office.
We have made due enquiries about General Brown & he has been seen.
It seems that he has operated on horses for âracingâ and this has alarmed & horrified the lady who witnessed it, and she jumped to the conclusion that he would not shirk at anything.
CWarren.
The final memo6 in this small file reads:
Better send
explanatory note
with this result
H.O. has got
the letter.
Can you also
ask Mr Boultbee
whether Sir C.W. has
done with it as
we ought to return to PO
CM.
There would seem to have been many communications made directly with the Home Office as well as the police. Another example from the Home Office letters file is the following copy letter7 regarding Mr John Lock who had been detained by the police, as we have seen:
